The biggest downside is the education, which is significantly behind the UK system (due largely to the fact they start teaching children to read and write in the year they are turning 7, rather than the year they turn 5), but the curriculum is also much more basic. Please feel free to email me if you would like to know anything specific about moving to SA!

We are an English family currently on an expat assignment in Johannesburg (we have been here two years). I went straight out to buy the The White Giraffe and Dolphin Song for my 8 year old daughter after your post last week, and she (and I) are both really enjoying it. She was so excited when I told her it was about a girl moving from England to South Africa, just what she did two years ago!
